DAMAGE CAUSED TO HOOF STRUCTURE BY USING WD40 TO TREAT FUNGAL INFECTION
21 YEAR OLD GELDING SUFFERING FROM FUNGAL INFECTION OF ALL FROGS. HE HAD BEEN SHOD ALL ROUND AND SHOES WERE REMOVED APPROX 6 WEEKS PRIOR TO MY VISIT.
IT WAS PROFESSIONALLY RECOMMENDED THAT HIS FUNGAL INFECTION BE TREATED WITH WD40 (WD-40 protects metal from rust and corrosion etc.)
AS A RESULT FROGS AND HEEL BULBS WERE VERY SORE AND REACTIVE TO FINGER PRESSURE. ALL FROGS HAD DECEPTIVELY DEEP CENTRAL SULCUSES.
ALL FROGS CONTAINED LAYERS OF BLACK OOZING INFECTION. THE FROG STRUCTURE WAS DECAYING AND INEFFECTIVE. THE SMELL DEFIES DESCRIPTION !
AS THE HOOVES WERE TRIMMED IT BECAME APPARENT FROM THE WEAK CRUMBLING TEXTURE WD40 HAD ALSO PENETRATED THE WHOLE HOOF.
DUE TO SORENESS, THE HORSE HAD CHANGED IT'S POSTURE TO COPE WITH DISCOMFORT RESULTIING IN LOSS OF TOP LINE.
DUE TO SEVERITY OF THE INFECTION I CONSULTED WITH THE PRESIDENT OF EQUINE TECHNOLOLGIES, USA FOR ADVICE ON WHETHER IT WAS POSSIBLE TO USE CLEAN TRAX TO TACKLE INFECTION AND DEGRADATION OF STRUCTURES.
EXTRACT FROM REPLY: ."...... You want to know if you can apply CleanTrax in the presence of the WD40. The answer is YES - in fact the CleanTrax soak will not only sterilize the hooves, but it will also purge out the graphite deposited by the WD40 application.
Since WD40 contains solvents that will dry and destroy healthy tissue, the hooves may be much more likely to support fungal growth. In addition, if the cells are killed by the solvent, they will be attacked by putrifying bacteria that live in the environment and survive on dead tissue. When they are active, these organisms create a black ooze and an odor of rotten eggs. This may be the black color that you described." - PRESIDENT EQUINE TECHNOLOGIES
A FULL CLEAN TRAX TREATMENT PROGRAM WAS STARTED. COMFORT RETURNED RAPIDLY, HOWEVER,
IT HAS TAKEN SEVERAL MONTHS AND 3 TRIM CYCLES FOR ALL TRACES OF INFECTION THE WD40 CREATED TO BE REMOVED BEFORE STRUCTURES BEGAN TO STABILISE AND BENEFIT FROM IMPROVING DYNAMIC BALANCE AND RE-GROWTH. SPECTRASAN WAS USED AS A FOLLOW UP.
DURING FIRST TRIM
LEFT HIND AND RIGHT HIND HAD THE MOST INFECTION
WD40 HAD ALSO BEEN SPRAYED INTO FROG SULCUSES RESULTING IN A HIGH LEVEL OF SORENESS AND DISCOMFORT
APPROX 3 MONTHS LATER - NO SIGN OF INFECTION AND HOOVES CONTINUE TO RECOVER STRUCTURE
