EQUINE DIGITAL ELASTOSIS (EDE) -
MINIATURE SHETLAND SUFFERING FROM EQUINE DIGITAL ELASTOSIS, CONVENTIONALLY KNOWN AS FOUNDER. METABOLIC FLUCTUATIONS AND FLARE UPS CONTINUE SINCE THE ACUTE STAGE FOUR YEARS AGO.
CLEAR EVIDENCE OF UNEVEN GROWTH, HIGH WALL, DISHING AT TOE AND SEPARATION AND OR STRETCHING OF GOLDEN LINE INDICATE CHANGES TO THE SUSPENSORY AND SUPPORTIVE APPARATUS. THIS HAS RESULTED IN DEFORMATION OF UNGULAR CARTILAGES AS A FOUNDATION OF SUPPORT FOR THE CORONARY BAND AND INTERNAL ARCH APPARATUS. SECONDARY EVIDENCE IS THE LOSS OF INTEGRITY OF LAMINAR TO HORN INTERACTION.
XRAYS CONFIRM THAT STRESSES APPLIED TO THE HOOF CAPSULE TO ACCOMMODATE DISCOMFORT HAVE, OVER TIME, RESULTED IN AREAS OF OSSICIFICATION OF CARTILAGE, WITH EVIDENCE OF CHANGES TO THE NAVICULAR BONE AND EXTENSOR PROCESSOR. LONG TERM DEFORMED HOOF SYNDROME HAS ALSO LED TO RESTRICTION/DEVIATION OF BLOOD FLOW RESULTING IN FLUCTUATING TEMPERATURE AND CELL DETERIORATION WITHIN THE LAMELLA OF THE HOOF CAPSULE. HOOVES AND LEGS EXPERIENCING ERRATIC TEMPERATURE CHANGES FROM HOT AND COLD TO THE TOUCH.
SOFT AREAS ON SOLES AT THE DISTAL BORDER OF P3 ON BOTH FRONTS WHICH ARE VERY REACTIVE TO FINGER PRESSURE
HIGH RISK OF ABSCESSING
WEIGHT NEEDS ADDRESSING
ALL FOUR HOOVES HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. POSTURAL CHANGES DUE TO DISCOMFORT HAVE LED TO SIGNIFICANT, UNEVEN HOOF WEAR OF HINDS. TENSION THROUGHOUT THE SHETLAND'S BODY IS EVIDENT, AS A RESULT OF DISCOMFORT BITING AND REARING HAVE BECOME MAJOR ISSUES.
THE LEVEL OF OVERALL STRESS AND DISCOMFORT HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR SEVERAL EPISODES OF COLIC.
Begin the process of re-balancing hoof capsule aiming for correct dynamic balance over time. Removal of necrotic areas of growth.
Turnout utilising current facilities of barn and hardstanding. Shavings bedding, rubber matting and smooth level concrete given as optional areas for movement.
Commence Detox program
Trickle feeding of hay combined with spring barley or oat straw
Clean Trax both fronts and follow up with daily cleaning using Spectrasan
BEFORE APPLYING TREATMENT PROTOCOL
AFTER FIRST HPT METHOD - NECROTIC TISSUE AND BALANCE ADDRESSED - SHETLAND'S POSTURE AND PRESSURE ON THE HOOF CAPSULES CHANGED LEADING TO AN IMMEDIATE REDUCTION IN THE LEVEL OF DISCOMFORT AND THE FIRST STAGE TOWARDS ACHIEVING DYNAMIC BALANCE
3 MONTHS ON - Though Equine Digital Elastosis is still evident, overall improvement has been significant and exercise commenced on soft going. The difficult behaviour has been replaced with enthusiasm and interest in work and life in general. Close monitoring is essential to prevent disrupting the delicate balance that has been achieved.
