TOBY IS A ID/TB AND 18 YEARS OLD. APPROX 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO MY VISIT TOBY HAD BECOME LAME. UP UNTIL THAT TIME HE HAD BEEN IN FULL WORK HACKING AND EVENTING.
TOBY HAD BEEN FITTED WITH HEART BAR SHOES AND BOTH HOCKS WERE BECOMING PROBLEMATIC DUE TO BONEY ARTHRITIC CHANGES. TOBY REMAINED LAME.
AS HE HAD ALWAYS BEEN IN FULL COMPETITIVE WORK FORCED REST HAD LEFT HIM DEPRESSED DUE TO DISCOMFORT AND BOREDOM.
TOBY HAD VERY POOR WALL MATRIX WITH INCREASED LATERAL WEAR ON HIS RIGHT FRONT. HE WAS SUFFERING FROM PALMAR HEEL PAIN WITH ALL HOOVES CONTRACTED WITH FUNGAL INFECTIONS IN FROGS AND WALLS .
THOUGH XRAYS DID NOT REVEAL ANY SIGNIFICANT BONEY CHANGES TO P3 OR NAVICULAR APPARATUS, A SECOND VETERINARY OPINION WAS TAKEN AND IT WAS SUSPECTED THAT HE HAD HYPER-KERATINISED HORN IN THE DORSAL WALL OF BOTH FRONTS. THE PROGNOSIS WAS NOT PROMISING AND IT WAS SUGGESTED HE MAY ONLY BE ABLE TO COPE WITH VERY LIGHT HACKING
TOBY SCORED A 2.5 ON THE SPECTRUM OF USABILITY AND HE WAS PRESCRIBED DAILY ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES
TOBY WAS VISIBLY LAME AS HE WALKED OUT HIS STABLE SO IT WAS FELT THAT A FURTHER GAIT ANALYSIS WOULD NOT BE IN HIS BEST INTERESTS.
The expectations for Toby were not high, the main priority was to return comfort.
It was very difficult to trim his hinds due to discomfort when elevated
Toby was fitted with Poly Flex Wraps on fronts for several cycles and hinds for one cycle
All hooves were Clean Traxed followed up with Spectrasan
He then progressed into Hoof Boots ftted with SOS Therapeutic Hoof Pads and progressed from in hand to light ridden work and low impact school work without boots
He had regular McTimoney/Sports Massage Therapy
As Toby's spirits lifted his work increased and 5 months later he was in ridden work and steadily progressed out of hoof boots.
Hoof boots are now only required on his fronts when hunting or if the ground is exceptionally hard
Due to improved hoof health and dynamic balance and regular exercise hind limb elevation has greatly improved
ZOOPHARMACOGNOSY - Toby self-selected Devil's Claw and is offered this regularly to reduce the need for daily anti-inflammatories which he now only needs approx 3-4 times per week to help with arthritic hocks
TOBY THE WONDER HORSE AND ANNETTE ENJOYING LIFE AGAIN !
UPDATE - "Katie had a wonderful time on Toby today and was jumping some really big fences around the Stonar cross country course. Toby was jumping really confidently apparently and met all his fences at advanced eventing speed, ie fast!" - ANNETTE NOV'11
