I have now owned my dear Dundee for 17 years. They have all been a joy but not without heart ache. He has suffered with tendon injuries on both his front legs and one nasty attack of laminitis. At 23 however he is currently enjoying excellent health and the spirit of a 3 year old! He is only in light work but approaches everything was some gusto! On a recent hack around Badminton I put my mother in her seventies on my seven year old mare Megan and I rode the erratic Mr Dundee – the world is a scary place!
The summer of 2010 has seen us enjoy the new experience of veteran showing. The world of showing is not a discipline I have any previous experience in, I just thought it would be fun to get the old boy out and about as he does love life such. A few tears were shed when we won our first veteran in hand class at the Tytherington show in August. This allowed us to qualify for the South West Veteran of the Year Championship that I was delighted we won also. At this point in our very young showing career I was tempted to call it a day as I wasn’t sure how he would react to anything less than a red ribbon (hee, hee!).
As he continued to feel so well and it was great spending time with him we ventured out again to the Bristol and Borders show in early October. He spent the duration of the show prancing and calling and we were over whelmed to win the Veteran In Hand class and qualify for the 2011 Championships.
I think that is it for the summer now but I hope he will be in such excellent shape as we move in to 2011.
The best part of all the shows for me was not only seeing how much he has enjoyed himself but that other people can see how young and well he looks – this heartens me that he still has many more years of strutting his stuff to go! He is a true character that will never be forgotten by all the humans who share his life – a big thank you to all of them that contribute to keeping in such good shape not least Lindsay with his well balanced feet.
